Barbullush School
About 700 children attend school in bookshop daily. The school is subdivided into a kindergarten, elementary school and high school. Last year, the local authority repairs the roof and redecorated the outside. The charity Breath financed the construction of sanitary facilities, and an auditorium/communal area. It sounds crazy, but they just don't exist. Since living in Albania I've discovered lots of things that we take for granted in the Netherlands just aren't here; heating and electricity in the classroom, reasonable tables and chairs, and if I could, I would renew the whole site. That, of course, is impractical. We can best focus, step-by-step, on what is possible and what we can change together. I understand that I'm in a privileged position, because I grew up partly in the Netherlands and I know how it can be. At the same time: I'm squished with three girlfriends sharing one desk, and we shiver together during winter. On the positive side, I’ve learned a great deal from the Albanian children and their culture. Together we support each other, and together we embark on the road to a better quality of life, rich with opportunities that begin with a good education.
